El Paso Water Utility

The site is designed to set an example for El Paso residents, reflecting the beauty of the region and demonstrating sustainable water use. The site is designed as a passive, water-harvesting sponge of Chihuahuan Desert plants, sculpted to create inspirational, safe, and secure spaces where building inhabitants can seek respite or social interaction while connected with nature.

The terraced landscape will be both functional and beautiful. Functional because it will provide site security, retain the steep perimeter grade, and improve the site’s overall permeability to maximize the site’s rainwater harvesting capabilities. Beautiful because the native plant palette nestled in and around the articulated terraces will provide seasonal intrigue, shade, and pollinator habitat.

As one moves from the site’s perimeter toward the new buildings, the terraces widen to create occupiable amenity space for employees. Microclimatic courtyards provide desired gathering and outdoor dining spaces. A nature trail encourages employees to exercise while immersing themselves in the indigenous landscape. Trees will provide dappled shade for the new courtyards and trail network. This new landscape will tell the story of passive rainwater collection through a series of sculpted gathering spaces and bioswales that send precious rainwater to new plantings rather than adjacent city streets.
