Indian Lodge

The renovation of the central courtyard at the iconic Indian Lodge solves accessibility and circulation issues while creating new gathering spaces. Flanked by two additions that were added to the pueblo-style lodge in 1967, the existing courtyard was a bare slope with twelve feet of elevation change between hotel rooms. Native boulder walls terrace the sloping site and help to nestle new shaded seating areas in lush desert plantings that mimic the Davis Mountain landscape. A new fireplace, shade structure, and water feature complement the Civilian Conservation Core-era architecture and create a valuable respite from the harsh desert sun. New accessible pathways and a central stair provide clear circulation to the pool and accessible rooms. Hardscape elements match the color of the native volcanic rock for a harmonious visual connection to Keesey Canyon beyond. The renovated courtyard grounds combine a celebration of place with comfortable outdoor gathering environments, reinforcing the striking contrast of the white adobe architecture within the rugged landscape.
