Laity Lodge

Positioned alongside the Frio River in a remote Texas Hill Country canyon, Laity Lodge has been offering spiritual retreats to Texans for generations. Despite occupying a fragile riparian ecosystem, the site and visitor experience were dominated by large parking lots and a lack of connection to the river. Coinciding with the renovation of the historic lodge and the addition of a secondary retreat campus, TELA collaborated with the architect to design a new arrival sequence, vehicular and pedestrian circulation, and a series of gathering spaces that were sensitively integrated into the existing topography and vegetation. Parking lots were revegetated as wildfower meadows, altering stormwater runoff as it makes its way to the Frio. New overlooks and seating areas offer views to the river below, framed by an understory of newly planted native trees and shrubs. Hardscape materials were locally sourced or harvested from the site, providing a refined visitor experience that is new, yet familiar. The improved outdoor experience will reinforce a connection with the natural world while engaging the arts and creative expression.
