Stagecoach Inn Master Plan
Built in 1854 on the banks of Salado Creek, the historic Stagecoach Inn stands as one of the oldest buildings in the Village of Salado. The Inn was founded as a stagecoach rest stop and overnight point along the Chisolm Trail, supplying visitors with comforts and fresh spring water drawn from an on-site cave. In its prime, the Inn attracted such visitors as Sam Houston and George Armstrong Custer, and through the years continued as a destination for travelers near and far. Throughout the 20th century, the Inn property was developed with compound of mid-century guest rooms, gathering spaces, and two swimming pools and became well known as a dining place. Now, the historic Inn, which has stood for many years in disrepair, is being renovated and revitalized to bring the past into the present. The landscape master plan aims to create a coherent yet diverse guest experience, linking the old with the new through colorful native and traditional planting, textural hardscape, a well navigable network of paths, and unique outdoor gathering spaces shaded by centuries-old live oaks. Invasive plants will be replaced with natives to improve habitat for Texas wildlife and riparian areas will be restored, strengthening connection to Salado Creek. Phase 1 will begin with the renovation of the historic inn and dining room, while subsequent phases will address the greater hotel facilities and property.
