West Texas Ranch

TELA worked closely with the client and architect to revitalize 2.5 acres of outdoor space surrounding an existing ranch house and restore the 8,000-acre ranch property, resulting in an award-winning design that incorporates locally-sourced materials and a diverse palette of native and adapted xeric plant selected to withstand the West Texas climate. Suffering from significant degradation from its years as a working ranch, the project presented the challenge of both ecological remediation and aesthetic transformation. Retaining walls made from local stone define outdoor living spaces adjacent to the residence, including an outdoor dining room, swimming pool, courtyard gardens, and bunk house compound. Similarly, the territory of the wild and the domestic is delineated by a low stone wall, which also forms the outermost edge of the swimming pool. The pool, set within buffalo grass terraces and vibrant native plants, frames and reflects views to the greater landscape. To honor the ranch’s history, TELA protected pecan and redbud trees planted by the former owner and added an orchard of 6 pecan trees near the house to create shade for outdoor dining. These formal outdoor rooms accentuate the rugged beauty of restored ranchland, where vehicular access was defined and old ranch roads were revegetated with native grasses and mesquites to create a fitting foreground for this West Texas retreat.
