The Capri

The Capri Lounge & Event Space, once a motel parking lot and decommissioned military hangar, is reclaimed as a community concert hall and beer garden in downtown Marfa, Texas. Here, rustic gabion walls transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, define outdoor gathering areas, and provide a textural backdrop for outdoor events. A vine-covered steel mesh arbor provides shelter for the formal outdoor dining space, which overlooks lush native gardens punctuated by floating permeable granite islands where small groups may gather around a fire. A recirculating water trough, the focal point of the garden, further unifies the built and living systems: harvesting rainwater from the roof, the trough overflows into an arroyo that irrigates a community orchard and slowly channels rainwater to an adjacent creek. Blurring the boundary between the interior and exterior, the formal and informal, the landscape design draws patrons to gather outdoors and explore the elements of earth, rain and fire authentic to the West Texas landscape.
