Pfluger Circle at Lady Bird Lake
Pfluger Circle is located at the north end of Pfluger Bridge, a hike-and-bike trail link between downtown Austin and metropolitan parks across Lady Bird Lake. The junction between the bridge and the shore, Pfluger circle has been transformed from a hot, barren space into an enticing milestone and destination for trail users to relax and meet friends. The design invites joggers and cyclists to circle through concentric terraced gardens of colorful, textural and fragrant native plants that soften bridge infrastructure and utilize it to capture water for irrigation. Water is collected from bridge downspouts and directed through a spiraling gutter feature that deposits water in the upper terrace garden. Water then flows by gravity to the planted terraces below. Reaching ground level, water irrigates a central grove of ‘Bubba’ Desert Willows that shade limestone benches within a central plaza. Here trail users have the opportunity to sit and rest, or continue on their path.
