The San Antonio Botanical Garden's acquisition of an adjacent 9-acre site has provided the opportunity to expand the breadth of the Garden and redefine the Garden experience. TELA lead the design of a new entry sequence and variety of themed gardens, drawing inspiration from the both the region and the Garden itself. Upholding a mission of accessibility, environmental stewardship, public outreach and education, new plazas and gardens are designed to complement existing gardens, showcase the ecoregions of Texas, and engage the site’s history as a former quarry and waterworks.

Constructed topography introduces visitors to distinct microclimates and experiences of nature, from fern-covered limestone walls that recall the rivers and canyons of the Texas Hill Country to golden grasslands that recall the high plains. A network of pedestrian paths welcomes visitors to explore a variety of new themed gardens—an event lawn, community garden, demonstration kitchen and culinary garden, and family adventure garden that features nature-inspired inter-generational play elements—and provides links to existing trails and destinations, such as the Kumamoto En and Lucille Halsell Conservatory. Located in rapidly urbanizing San Antonio, the garden expansion demonstrates the diversity and beauty of Texas plants, promotes healthful living, and fosters a sense of connection to and stewardship for the natural world.
