Phoenix Art Museum
Expansion of the Phoenix Art Museum called for the creation of a new entry forecourt, parking lot, and extensive landscape renovations. TELA's design for these outdoor spaces responds to the museum’s urban and ecological context, balancing formal geometries with rich planting that at once unify and define disparate program spaces. Palo Brea trees provide color and shade, and serve as a visual link between the parking gardens and museum forecourt. The forecourt is comprised of a series of overlapping garden spaces with a rain-fed fountain, which intersects a grass plinth for sculpture display, as their focal point. Smooth stucco walls to the west of the forecourt provide refuge from adjacent Central Avenue and become a backdrop to bold Sonoran Desert plantings and activity within the central plaza. Together, these spaces create an oasis for gathering and the arts in the heart of downtown Phoenix.
